The city was quiet now, as it always was near the break of dawn. Even the devils feared the streets at this hour. The word had gotten out, the hunter was in town and they didn’t follow society’s rules. Now as she sat high above the city, her tails curled around her legs and her head resting on her knees, she let out a soft sigh and twitched her ears to the sound of the wind. Nothing… Nothing to ease the hole that had built inside of her. How many years had she been doing this? How many mornings had she sat watching the sun rise on how many building tops, the first golden rays making her fur seem like red fire as the morning breeze ruffled it.
The wind blew the base of her black trench around behind her as her dark eyes adjusted to the coming light. The cornea’s black as night and the pupils as bright as hells fire. “Alone…” She spoke the word softly as the sun glinted off of golden horns and she slowly rose to her feet on the railing of the skyscraper that overlooked the waking city. “Another day… another night, and another name.” Her ears drooped as she stepped off the edge, falling several hundred feet to land gracefully on padded foot paws; leaving not but a trace of scent to mark her passing. Her boot clad paws made little sound as she walked down the street; nor did her black leather pants seemingly pored on her. The only sound was the slight metallic ting of the chain hanging from her belt loops disturbed the silence.
Even the warmth of the sun was no help to her mood, a frown marring the smooth white fur on the underside of her muzzle as she found herself in the warehouse district. Ah yes, this was it. The anniversary of when she became destined to be alone. She’d blown up a city block on that day, and sent poisonous gas through another in an effort to defend others from what had happened to her. Then she’d taken the bargain offered, to walk earth again she accepted the challenge; she became the hunter. Now, all that anyone saw of her was the demon, they called her a soulless killer, a reaper on the streets. She could walk among them yes, without them ever knowing who she was… but she craved more. No one had ever gotten close, one look at her second tail, the mere glimpse of a horn and she was a horror. No one in all her years had ever seen anything more of her, they never tried. She may carry the title of a justice demoness, but that did not mean that she had no heart… no soul. But she’d long given up hope of any ever seeing beyond the unusual, beyond the ability to wield fire. Now she was invisible. A story in the night that struck terror into the most committed mortal devil.
Alone she sat, on the edge of the pier in the warehouse district; not far from the location that changed her life forever. As the city awoke she sat, blond hair blowing in the wind and glistening in the sun of a new day; no horns, no strange markings, one tail, just a lone vixen dressed like she was fresh out of the club. Forever… alone…
